In the Studio : Bradwell Well Dressing

As a mosaicist I am fascinated by traditional well dressing technique.

In deepest Derbyshire the Celtic practice of honouring and decorating wells and springs is continued every summer, though in Christianised and, more recently, secular contexts. The Peak District village of Bradwell holds its well dressings and carnival in early August and here are this year’s designs. As a mosaicist I am fascinated by the traditional well dressing technique of producing complex images by pressing flower petals and seeds into a clay base on a decorative wooden framework.
